The best website accessibility checker is the one whose leftover work you can actually do.

A website accessibility checker loads a page and flags WCAG failures a machine can see. Some tools stop there. Some add a crawl, a PDF, a widget, or a certificate.

I tested this the way a buyer actually shops: same public homepage, five tools, five leftover jobs. WAVE showed me the failing element. axe told a developer which rule ID to search. Lighthouse mixed that score with performance. ACE wanted a domain license. We wanted a dated pack plus cookies. None of them made the site “compliant.”

2. axe DevTools and axe-core

Best for developers. Low false positives, CI recipes, the engine inside Chrome Lighthouse’s accessibility panel and inside Complience.app.

Deque publishes axe-core as the ruleset. In practice, that is the checker you want in a pull request: a rule ID a developer can grep, not a screenshot of colored icons.

What it will not do: a client PDF, a cookie scan, or a recrawl while you sleep. Empty buttons still appear on 30.6% of the WebAIM Million home pages. axe will flag many of those. Someone still has to change the HTML.

3. Chrome Lighthouse

Best for a snapshot already in DevTools. Accessibility is one category next to performance, SEO, and best practices.

Google’s own Lighthouse accessibility scoring uses axe-core. That is a feature and a limit. You get a number in a tool you already open. You also get a score that sits beside Largest Contentful Paint. That is how marketing teams treat a 92 as “we’re fine” while 83.9% of top home pages still fail low-contrast text on a WAVE-style pass.

4. ACE by AccessibilityChecker.org

Best for a deep single-domain crawl, optional SmartFix snippet, and a certificate product. Priced per domain (Lite about $89/month).

Stronger crawl than we ship. Weaker fit if you monitor several small client sites or you refuse overlay-like remediations. A certificate product is a different sale from a dated evidence pack. After the FTC’s accessiBe order ($1 million over allegedly deceptive WCAG-compliance claims), buyers should ask what any “certificate” actually attests.

5. Complience.app

Best for agencies and owners who want axe-core plus cookies before Accept, a dated PDF, and a recrawl. Standard is $29/month for five sites.

We do not inject SmartFix, sell a VPAT, or stamp the site compliant. What actually works for our buyers is the boring remainder: the same URL next month, a client name on the cover, an email when the score drops.
